Freshwater Aquariums

Most Freshwater Aquarium owners want more than simply displaying some pretty fish in a Fish-Tank. They usually hope to create a small habitat that simulates the home of some of nature’s most special and spectacular creatures, fresh and brackish water fish. Freshwater Aquarium setup, step by step directions can be found in Aquarium Tips & Techniques.

We design our Freshwater Aquariums to simulate fresh (very low to no salinity) Tropical water environments. The actual habitats we simulate are giant rivers, streams, or oxbow lakes, all of which are almost as rich in animal species as the rainforests that surround them.

Today, less than 10% freshwater tropical aquarium fish are caught in the wild. But, originally the world’s tropical rainforest waters are the home to the majority of freshwater fish species. The Amazon Basin alone has over 2,300 known species and possibly as many unidentified species.

Unfortunately the world’s rainforests and therefore freshwater fish species in the wild are threatened by human activity. The tropical rainforest and its fish species are unique and irreplaceable and once they are destroyed, they’re gone forever.

Tropical rainforests have some of the largest rivers in the world like the Amazon, Madeira, MeKong, Negro, Orinoco, and Zaire (Congo), because of the tremendous amount of rain their watersheds receive. These mega-rivers are fed by countless smaller tributaries, streams, and creeks. For example, the Amazon alone has some 1,100 tributaries, 17 of which are over 1000 miles long. Although large tropical rivers are fairly uniform in appearance and water composition, their tributaries vary greatly. Thus it is those tributaries that provide a large diversity of fish species and where we get many of our inventory of freshwater aquarium stock.

In addition to rivers, rainforests have conventional, free-standing lakes and so-called oxbow lakes, formed when a river changes course. These lakes are home to species specially adapted to the quiet, stagnate conditions.

Our store stocks or will order the best aquariums or fish tanks that money can buy. That includes a rich supply of freshwater fish and freshwater aquarium decor to go with your freshwater fish tank.

Fish-Tanks.net's page on Aquarium Tips and Techniques, leads you step by step through both freshwater aquarium setup and saltwater aquarium setup including Reef Tanks that simulate conditions for a wide variety of Invertebrates.
